How to Get Rid of Front-Load Washer Odor

A musty front-load washer usually comes from the door gasket, detergent drawer or drain pump filter. Simple steps to clean it and keep the smell from coming back.

Front-load washers use less water and are gentle on clothes, but their tight door seal holds moisture. That moisture, plus detergent residue, is what causes the musty smell. The fix is a mix of cleaning and a few habits.

Clean the door gasket

Pull back the rubber boot around the door opening. Hair, lint, coins and slimy residue collect in the folds. Wipe it with warm water and a little mild detergent, then dry it with a towel.

Clean the detergent drawer

Pull the dispenser drawer out completely. Most have a release tab. Rinse it in the sink and wipe out the cavity behind it, where mildew often hides.

Run a cleaning cycle

Use the Tub Clean or Clean Washer cycle once a month with a washer cleaner tablet or the product your owner's manual recommends. Run it with the drum empty.

Clean the drain pump filter

Most front loaders have a small access door at the bottom front. Behind it is a filter that catches socks, coins and lint. Put down towels and a shallow pan, because water will come out, then unscrew the filter slowly and rinse it. A clogged filter leaves dirty water sitting in the machine.

Habits that prevent odor

When to call a technician

If the washer will not drain, stops mid-cycle, shows an error code, leaks, or the smell returns quickly after cleaning, a pump, hose or seal may have failed. These are good reasons to book a repair visit.
